Pregnant women should not be exposed to covid patients

Pregnant women should not work in a way that puts them at risk of being exposed to the coronavirus, announces the Swedish Work Environment Authority on its website.

The authority’s message comes at the request of a security representative in the Värmland region, who believes that pregnant women should not work near patients infected with covid-19. The Swedish Work Environment Authority agrees with:

“The Work Environment Law and our regulations apply to all workplaces. We always take a position in each individual case when it comes to requests from security representatives. If we receive similar cases, we will make similar decisions. Pregnant women should not have tasks in which they are exposed to the new corona virus, “writes Ulrika Scholander, section manager of the Swedish Work Environment Authority on the website.

However, they point out that work during pregnancy is not dangerous in itself, and that the state of knowledge about pregnancy and covid-19 is not entirely clear, but that the precautionary principle should be applied.

Those who are pregnant should have a modified work environment to avoid exposure, and if this is not possible, other tasks should be offered, writes the authority.
