Starting Sunday, the United States will ban the download of popular Chinese web services Tiktok and Wechat.
The US Department of Commerce justifies the decision by saying it wants to oppose China’s attempts to collect data on US citizens. The Ministry of Commerce could not present any proof of this.
During a press conference today, Commerce Minister Wilbur Ross commented on the decision.
– The Communist Party of China has demonstrated the means and motives to use these applications to threaten the national security, foreign policy and economy of the United States.
The Chinese owner of the applications, ByteDance, ensures that the applications are managed independently in the US and that China cannot collect information about Americans through the applications.
In practice, the decision means that downloading of applications through Apple and Google is prohibited in the US.
Wechat has nearly 19 million daily users in the United States, while Tiktok has around 100 million.
