Ministers from European and Latin American countries are reluctant to participate with observers in Venezuela’s parliamentary elections in December, as they believe they will not be held freely and fairly.
Two weeks ago, the Venezuelan government invited the EU countries and the UN representatives to follow the elections on the ground.
But the International Contact Group on Venezuela (ICG), made up of representatives of European and Latin American countries, writes in a joint statement that “currently, the conditions for a transparent, inclusive, free and fair electoral process do not exist.” They add that there is little left for the December 6 elections to plan the dispatch of electoral observers.
Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro responds, referring to the country’s constitution, that it is not possible to postpone the elections.
