One step in the government and coalition party green tax shift is to make it more expensive with a company car. The proposal is estimated to increase tax revenue by SEK 150 million.
The Minister of Finance and Housing for Bolund (MP) says that the standard invoice for preferred cars will now be adjusted to reflect the cost of private cars. As an employer, offering a car instead of a constant salary will no longer be profitable.
– This is part of a broader ecological tax shift. This year, we are making decisions on environmental tax increases, which in the long term will bring in just over SEK 4 billion. These and previous environmental taxes offer scope for even bigger tax cuts for most Swedes, says Per Bolund.
– One of the guiding principles we have had is to eliminate subsidies that are harmful to the environment. Here’s an example of that: We have a system where it’s much more profitable to get a salary in the form of a beneficial car, than to cash it out as usual, he says.
By bolund says which he estimates is 25 percent more profitable with a company car under current rules. That difference will disappear with this proposal.
– Now we are correcting it so that having a company car is the same as buying a private one.
The government estimates that there are 300,000 company cars in the country, of which 50,000 are replaced per year.
How many fewer cars do you expect this proposal to entail?
– My hope is not that there will be less, but that it will lead to more sustainable cars. That you should choose an electric car, a zero-emission car over cars that emit greenhouse gases, says Per Bolund.
How much do you estimate this affects emissions?
– We know that the beneficial car is often heavier and thirstier than the average car. We hope the proposal leads to the opposite. Make the profit car cleaner because you choose an electric car.
You also want this to lead to more people using public transportation. How do you see then that people in rural areas do not have the same access to public transport as in cities?
– It is especially in large cities where you have a car as a salary benefit. Therefore, the field is not affected to the same extent. Without it, we use other tools to make it possible to drive a car in a sustainable way, especially since we have decided that we will have many more biofuels to use in gasoline and diesel.
In the budget proposal for 2021, Per Bolund also announces that the government with L&C proposes to abolish the energy tax reduction for heating fuels. A tax for a more efficient use of energy in industrial operations, which today represents a third of all emissions. The proposal will generate SEK 150 million in higher tax revenue in 2021.
