Junior WC 2022 was destined to be played in Gothenburg.

That will not be the case.

Instead, Sweden will host JVM 2024.

On Thursday, the International Ice Hockey Federation held meetings to discuss upcoming national team tournaments.

One of the tournaments that was retaken was the Junior WC 2022, a tournament that was scheduled to take place in Gothenburg.

“Two-year shift”

But due to the crown pandemic, the tournament will be held on Swedish soil in 2024.

“We have all the respect for this situation that affects the whole world and international ice hockey. Obviously we had wanted to be in charge of the event as planned next year, but now we are looking forward to seeing a real hockey party in the 2023/2024 season. We look forward to holding this event together with Gothenburg as planned but with a two-year delay. ” says Anders Larsson, president of the Swedish Ice Hockey Association in a press release.

In a “bubble”

This year’s Youth World Cup is being held as planned in Edmonton, but in a different way. Much like the Stanley Cup playoffs, it will take place in a so-called bubble with empty stands. Canada will also host JVM 2022 due to the fact that 300,000 tickets have already been sold for this year’s tournament.

Earlier in the day, it was also announced that the U18 WC for women, which was to be held in Mjölby and Linköping in January, will be canceled.
