The future of electric scooters is at stake in Copenhagen. The industry fears this ahead of the municipal management meeting tonight. On the table is a proposal to ban the rental of electric scooters on municipal land.

Kristian Agerbo from the Voi rental company says he’s shocked.

– We have had more than 600,000 users in Copenhagen. We are happy to be able to help Copenhagen residents get around the city, says Agerbo, who is also a spokesperson for the industrial organization Løbehjulsalliancen.

The industry has proposed that special parking spaces for electric scooters be built on municipal land and that it be only possible to park them there. But several left-wing parties have advocated a ban on municipal land leases, when the issue had previously been discussed in the Copenhagen technical and environmental committee.

On municipal land, more benches, more public toilets and more space for cyclists should take precedence over electric scooters, says Mayor for Technology and Environment Ninna Hedeager Olsen (Enhedslisten). But that doesn’t mean a total ban on electric scooters, he emphasizes.

If the use of municipal land is not allowed, it remains to try to rent electric scooters through shops, but industry representative Agerbo does not see that alternative as realistic.
