On November 30 of next year, Barbados celebrates 55 years of independence from Great Britain. Related to this, the Caribbean island nation wants to cut the last bar and strip Queen Elizabeth II of her position as queen and head of state.

– The time has come to leave our colonial past behind, says Barbados Prime Minister Mia Mottley.

In addition to Barbados, Queen Elizabeth is head of state for 14 other former British colonies. The office is largely ceremonial and the queen is represented by her governors general.

However, under Elizabeth’s rule, several countries have chosen the same path that Barbados has embarked on and become a republic, including Ghana, South Africa, and most recently Mauritius in 1992.

To a question about the Barbados decision, a spokesman for the British court replied:

– It is a matter for the government and the people of Barbados.
