Giant painting.

Red card.

Nightmare minutes brought Hammarby down in the Europa League playoffs.

– Don’t even think it’s a free kick, says Hammarby coach Stefan Billborn after 0-3 against Lech Poznan.

Hammarby’s first European adventure in thirteen years stopped just around the corner. Because after winning the initial qualifying round at home against Puskás AFC, they now came out in the second qualifying round of the Europa League group stage against Polish Lech Poznań.

Where the qualifying game turned into a nightmare for Bajen.

After a goalless first half, where both Aron Jóhannsson and Gustav Ludwigson took a free kick, the first goal for promotion came within ten minutes of the second 45. Midfielder Kalle Björklund was the last defender to move the ball away from him. after a pass from Richard Magyar, Björklund then tried to pass the ball to goalkeeper David Ousted. But the attack was too weak and Pedro Tiba got a free kick off the Hammarby goalkeeper. And the Portuguese without a doubt put the 1-0 to Poznán.

– We give them one, it’s very hard. The climb will be huge, says Hammarby coach Stefan Billborn.

How do you think Kalle Björklund will recover from that mistake?

– I think Kalle will come out stronger. Soccer has many error-based parameters. It’s not that much fun when you do it in a match like this, but you have to keep going. Kalle is a young player and this kind of thing happens. So it’s easy to forget the chances in the first half.

Eight minutes after the failure, the chances of moving on got worse. Team captain Jeppe Andersen took his second yellow card and was sent off. The Dane was surprised by the referee’s decision, and suggested that striker Tiba strengthen himself in the duel.

– I’ve seen it on my mobile screen. I don’t even think it’s a free kick. You’ve probably seen it too. People see it for themselves. Just watching the clip. It’s heavy. They would have preferred to shoot at the crossroads, says Billborn.

– It looked weird. If you’re going to give a second yellow, it should be a deliberate elbow. I haven’t heard that it is, if they’re going to give it a second yellow there, it should be a real thing, says Alexander Kacaniklic.

Two late goals

Hammarby with ten men tried to get a draw, but the opportunities did not come and Paulinho was replaced injured where he took the rear thigh. Instead, Jakub Kaminski and Filip Marchwinski decided in the final minutes when they scored 2-0 and the final result 3-0 through beautiful long shots.

– When you get a red card so early, it becomes very, very heavy. We try to keep it decent before 2-0 hits. It’s important to have some margins on your side and we didn’t have them today, says coach Billborn.

What is the main thing that you take away from this now that the European adventure is over?

– You have to do a broader analysis. It’s about being a little more cynical, a little more real. Play with slightly larger margins. The opponent does not need as many opportunities to use things to his advantage. It is something you can take with you.

Hammarby is thus eliminated from the Europa League qualifiers. In the third qualifying round, Poznan will now face the winner between Greek OFI Crete and Cypriot Apollon Limassol, that match will be decided on Thursday.
