More and more serious criminals are leaving Malmö

The “Stop shooting” project in Malmö started in October 2018 and since then has had contact with 132 people among the most violent criminals in Malmö. The goal is for them to stop using force.

– Most are under 25 years old, but despite that, they can burn completely to live like this. Things happen all the time and you have to constantly check behind your back. What happens when they come to us is that we make a tailor-made solution where you can move, get a home and a job. Our demand is to stop crime. We always keep an eye on them, says Anna Kosztovics, who works in the Malmö city dropout business.

80 criminals have received home visits

Stop shooting is a collaboration between the police, the city of Malmö and the prison service and so far the project has made home visits to 80 violent offenders in Malmö. The message is to stop using force. Otherwise, both the individual and the gang are affected.

– I think it’s good to use peer pressure to stop shootings. The police sanctions against the whole group, when someone uses serious violence, means that within the group you can decide to solve it in another way than by shooting. Many of those in criminal groups also want the shooting to stop, concludes Anna Kosztovics in the Malmö City deserter operation.
