Hold on to your hat, hurricane-force winds are now blowing along with heavy rain.

In some places there can be winds blowing up to 25 meters per second, causing Viking Line to cancel several departures.

– With such winds, you should not stay at sea, says meteorologist Mikael Sjöstrand.

The September sun and a temperature that rose above 20 degrees on the thermometer hit much of the country earlier in the week. But now the northwest winds blow in late summer.

– It should explode correctly, already on Wednesday morning it started to explode correctly in Jämtlandsfjällen and Dalafjällen with very strong gusts, up to 20 meters per second, says Mikael Sjöstrand, meteorologist at klar.se.

For the rest of the day, the wind gusts spread to the rest of the northern parts of Norrland and Svealand, then with intensities of about 17 meters per second. Strong winds, together with precipitation in the form of heavy rains and elements of snow in the mountains can pose risks in, among other things, traffic.

– When it blows so much, tree branches and possibly even some trees can fall, says Mikael Sjöstrand.

Viking Line cancels

The high summer heat that has existed in the south of the country is also being rejected, now awaiting cooler weather. Temperatures are 10 degrees in the north and 15 degrees in the south of Sweden.

During the night and morning, strong gusts of wind move towards the highlands and the coast of Roslag, where winds can sniff at speeds of 25 meters per second along the coastal strip. That is the limit of the storm.

– With such winds, you must not stay at sea, says Mikael Sjöstrand.

In the Baltic Sea, SMHI has issued a class 1 warning for hurricane force winds. As the wind moves further east out to sea, it will pick up in strength and there are signs that Finland will be hit by a real storm before the weekend. For us in Sweden, it is now, in the middle of the week, when the wind is strongest.

The weather has caused the giant ship Viking Line to cancel several sailings. The line between Mariehamn and Kapellskär will not be operated, nor will the line between Helsinki and Tallinn.

– A storm is coming, that’s why we made that decision. Safety always comes first, says Eleonora Hansi, information manager for Viking Line Scandinavia.

So there are good reasons to take the scarf out and wrap it a little more around the neck. The wind is the first of this kind of season and towards the end of the week the temperature can drop to just 11 degrees in the south of Sweden and 7 degrees in the north. Brrr!
