Now, 26 years later, a series of documentaries reveals new findings about the largest maritime accident in the Nordic region.
– We want to shed light on what really happened and give the victims various answers, says director Henrik Evertsson in a press release.
Since the accident, the Estonia cruise ferry has remained on the seabed, along with many of the victims. Only 137 of the 989 on board could be rescued.
According to the report from the Accident Investigation Board, the accident was caused by the ship’s bow visor coming loose. As a result, huge amounts of water entered in a short time. The ship capsized and sank.
But over the years, the official version has been questioned.
The Estonian Family and Victims Foundation, SEA, and the survivors since the tragedy have demanded that a thorough investigation be carried out into the entire wreck, something that has been repeatedly rejected.

Reveal new findings
But in the work of the new documentary series, that prohibition was broken.
The team behind the series came down and filmed on the spot.
– The case is of great public interest and this was the only way the production had to determine if the official statement available today is credible, or if there are circumstances that have not been disclosed to the public, says Jessica Linnman, communications director of the Discovery television company. Sweden, in the press release.
But the work must have led to new findings, which in turn led to new conclusions about the causes of the accident.

New histories
– The documentary series is created from a solid journalistic work, where we have in-depth interviews with several first-hand sources with a direct link to the Estonian disaster. Many sources have never before appeared in the media with their story, says director Henrik Evertsson.
He is one of two Swedes who are now accused of violating the peace of the grave.
