After 84 years, Rosa María Insúa has finally found out where her father is buried.

Her wedding ring has been found in a mass grave near the Spanish capital, Madrid.

Eugenio Juan Insúa was 29 years old when he was assassinated in July 1936, a few days after the start of the Spanish Civil War. He and 16 others who also defended the elected government were killed in an ambush by General Franco’s forces.

For decades, his family has tried to find out where he was buried, but to no avail.

But now the ARMH association, loosely translated as “The Association to Revive Historical Memory”, has found its wedding ring in a mass grave in El Espinar, about 10 kilometers northwest of Madrid. The ring could be identified by the inscription on it.

And last week, her daughter with tears in her eyes was able to receive her at the place where her father was buried.

“What a joy, we always thought it was here, but now we know for sure,” he said.

Marco González of ARMH now hopes that the remains of Eugenio Juan Insúa can be identified with DNA.

– So that the family can bury him where they want and not in the place that the murderers decided in 1936.

More than 100,000 people are missing after the civil war of 1936-1939 and the Franco dictatorship that ended in 1975. Since 2000, 740 mass graves with about 9,000 people have been opened.

On Tuesday, the government approved a bill with the goal of the state funding the works to help more families find their relatives.
