Israel’s relations with the rest of the Middle East have been hampered for many years by conflicts with Palestine. But the peace agreement that has now been signed may break the taboo of having contact with Israel, he reports. Al Jazeera.
United Arab Emirates Foreign Minister Anwar Gargash says the deal breaks “a psychological barrier” and is “the right way forward” for the entire region.
Palestine does not participate
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu attended the ceremony, but Palestine did not attend. They have previously criticized the deal. Hanan Ashrawi, a spokesman for the Palestinian umbrella organization PLO, has said, among other things, that the UAE is normalizing all of Israel through this.
For the Gulf states, the deal is partly about pragmatism. Israel has high-tech products and expertise, as well as influence in the United States. But the accords also reflect the new alliances in the Middle East that have been formed between countries that feel threatened by Iran.
Israel, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates are now united against Iran, which, despite extensive sanctions, has strengthened its regional influence following the fall of Saddam Hussein in Iraq.
