Nina Vimpari and her partner woke up shortly after midnight to a strangely loud howl. They could not determine where the sound was coming from and they thought it must be Fredrik Hoarse who alerted to some kind of danger.
– I ran in a panic and closed all the windows to do. We think it could be some kind of gas leak. My partner and I immediately started looking online and turned on the radio to hear what it was about, but we couldn’t find any information, he says.
The sound came at intervals with a long signal followed by a shorter silence. Because it was a very intense sound, they couldn’t determine where it was coming from. Concern for what it was and whether it was safe to go out meant that Nina and her partner could not go back to sleep.
– We were playful and wondered if we should go down to some shelter. I’ve never heard of anything like this. You’ve heard howling cars and maybe a fire alarm, but never this.

Heard in large parts of Gothenburg
In addition to Nina Vimpari, several readers have contacted GP with suggestions and to ask what the sound may have come from. In both Kortedala, Majorna and Sävenäs, residents of the area must have noticed the sound.
Once Nina had to get ready to go to work, she was noticeably plagued by a sleepless night – something even her colleagues turned out to be.
– Two of Kortedala had also stayed awake. They said it had been going on for a little over ten minutes. Another colleague of Angered, on the other hand, had not heard anything, he says.
“It’s strange that nobody shows up”
So the next day she is tired and a bit irritated after working only three hours of sleep.
– It has been very difficult, I want answers – What phase was the one that woke me up? I am amazed and curious. It’s strange that no one comes up and says what it is.
Despite a difficult night with great anxiety, Nina Vimpari is grateful that she is not alone in hearing the sound.
When he did not find an answer to either the crisis information or the radio, he looked on social media. There was a heated discussion about where the sound might have come from during the day, but no one has been able to provide an answer.
– I don’t usually get turned on that easily either. It feels good that many have listened to it so you know that you have not gone crazy.
Also in GP statistics, page views have increased significantly by the time the sound was heard. Another sign that many are looking for information about what happened.

It’s probably not a train
According to SOS Alarm and MSB, the civil protection and emergency preparedness authority, no VMA should have sounded over Gothenburg overnight.
– Unfortunately, we are not aware of what might have sounded, says Mirja Lagerberg, press contact with SOS Alarm.
When the Swedish Transport Administration can participate in the clip, they cannot give an answer about where it came from either. Nor should it have come from any of her construction projects in the city. Green Cargo, which operates freight trains to and from Gothenburg, doesn’t know sound either.
– Several colleagues have listened to me and our assessment is that it is probably not a train, says Maria Lindholm, communicator.
Kristoffer Clasén is president of Bergslagernas järnvägssällskap and after hearing the sound he doesn’t think it sounds like a train.
– It could have been a train that “backed down the line” and then gave a beep but this is too long. It’s also a different frequency than Fredrik’s hoarse, he says.
GP searches for the source of the sound.
Several readers have already heard from them this summer regarding a loud noise that echoed in Gothenburg, around the same time of day (see video clip above). Do you have more information about the sound or have you captured it on film? Contact us in [email protected]
