Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez made a multi-million dollar offer at the New York Mets baseball club earlier this summer.

Now the tender is over and the new owner of the club is ready.

Who won the bid? Not J Lo and A-Rod.

Jennifer Lopez and her husband Alex Rodriguez (former baseball star and World Series winner with the New York Yankees) were long in the race to become the new owners of the New York Mets. The couple was one of the last three actors involved in the tender and had made, together with the financiers, an offer of 1.7 billion dollars, corresponding to 15.7 billion crowns.

However, that sum was not enough when the final price reached 2.4 billion dollars, approximately 21.1 billion crowns.

Steve Cohen now becomes the majority owner of the New York Mets.

Scandalous billionaire

The star couple came to be outbid by the offer of hedge fund mogul Steve Cohen, who throughout the process was seen as one of the favorites to become the new owner of the classic club. Cohen, who according to Forbes is worth more than SEK 123 billion, has a controversial past and was forced to pay a fine of almost SEK 8 billion in 2013 after pleading guilty to fraud.

The Billions series, which is about a billionaire fighting a federal prosecutor in New York, is considered to be based in part on billionaire Steve Cohen. He had previously been a minority owner in the Mets, but will now be the sole majority owner after the purchase, which is said to be the largest in American sports history.
