WHO leader Hans Kluge warns that the death toll from the corona pandemic will rise in the coming months.
At the same time, he says that a vaccine is not the solution to the crisis.
– I hear all the time that people say that the vaccine will spell the end of the pandemic. But of course it is not, she says.
All EU member states and the World Health Organization (WHO) gathered today for a digital gathering to discuss the continent’s viral response and establish a five-year plan on how to deal with the corona pandemic.
WHO European Director Hans Kluge approached the meeting with a grim message.
– More difficult times are expected. I think the death toll will increase in October and November, it says according to the Euronews news agency.
The news comes at a time when several European countries are experiencing a sharp increase in the number of new confirmed cases of the virus. In total, more than 51,000 new cases were reported in Europe on Friday, more than the highest list to date in April, according to TT.
– I understand that we are in a situation in which countries do not want to hear this news, says Hans Kluge.

The vaccine is not the solution
It also says that the pandemic will end sooner or later. But at the same time, it emphasizes that a vaccine is not the only solution.
– I hear all the time that people say that the vaccine will spell the end of the pandemic. But of course that is not the case, she tells Euornews.
– We don’t even know if the vaccine will help all population groups. Now we get some signs that it will help one group and not the other. And if we have to order different vaccines, what a logistical nightmare! The end of the pandemic is the moment when we, as a society, learn to live with it. And it is up to us and that is a very positive message.

FHM agrees
Both Anders Tegnell and the director general of the Swedish Public Health Agency, Johan Carlson, have previously expressed that a vaccine does not in itself mean a solution to the corona pandemic in Sweden.
– A future vaccine will likely be an important tool in the fight against the pandemic. However, it is not the tool that ultimately solves the problem. A vaccine alone cannot stop the pandemic, important preventive measures must remain for the foreseeable future, Johan Carlson said at a press conference in late August.
