The weather? Migration? Work market? Where is the biggest news bomb dropped when the EU base, Ursula von der Leyen, lays out the words about the situation in the Union?

Expectations – and concerns – are high ahead of Wednesday’s speech in Brussels.

Slowly but surely, the Commission President’s speech on the situation in the Union has become a key issue in EU policy. The speech was presented in 2010 and takes place annually before the European Parliament in September, except in years when there have been EU elections.

Here the main issues of the Commission’s plans for the coming years are presented, and both political scientists and economists enthusiastically analyze the choice of words, order and weight.

Now that Ursula von der Leyen gives her first speech, there is curiosity about a number of important areas.

Climate is a major problem. The figure is expected to present a target of reducing carbon dioxide emissions by at least 55 percent by 2030 compared to the 1990 level. At the same time, environmental organizations are pushing even more stringent demands, for example, the imminent elimination of gasoline and diesel cars.

minimum salary

On the Swedish side, politicians, trade unions and the business community listen carefully to what is being said about minimum wages.

– We absolutely do not want Ursula von der Leyen to say that it will be a directive, says Swedish EU MP Heléne Fritzon (S), who together with her colleague Johan Danielsson (S) met with the EU labor market commissioner Tuesday to push at the last minute. .

The Commission has promised that the wage proposal will not force Sweden to abandon the “Swedish model”, where wages are not set by politicians, but by negotiations between unions and companies. However, to be completely sure, both Sweden and the other Nordic countries require that the EU proposal be presented as a recommendation, rather than a binding directive.

Migration

Migration is another important issue. The European Commission has previously presented its presentation of the asylum and migration package that Swedish Commissioner Ylva Johansson worked on during the year. Proposals will arrive in a week and a sample from von der Leyen is now expected.

Tomas Tobé (M) wants to hear words about a “pragmatic immigration policy”.

– That they show that they want to take control of immigration to Europe, that we strengthen the common border, that we do a joint evaluation of asylum and that we begin to reduce, above all, economic immigration to Europe, says Tobé.

Von der Leyen’s speech will begin at 9 a.m. on Wednesday.
