The protests and the coordinating council in Belarus should receive greater recognition in Sweden, believes Svenska Pen. Stock Photography.
The Swedish government should recognize Svetlana Tichanovskaya and the Coordination Council as formal leaders in the fight for a free Belarus. Svenska Pen, the Union of Swedish Writers and the Eastern Group for Democracy and Human Rights write in an open letter in Dagens Nyheter.
“It is clear that Tikhanovskaya has broad popular support for the agenda it pursues. And the Coordination Council is created precisely to represent the interest of the people in the transition process that will lead to new democratic elections,” the organizations write.
They believe that the Swedish government should recognize the Council and Tikhanovskaya as representatives of the Belarusian people so as not to give Lukashenko long-term legitimacy to continue serving as president. Since neither the Council nor Tichanovskaya claim political power in the country, the recognition would be a step on the way to new democratic elections, it is written.
