The French film “Snyggingar” has received harsh criticism because it is said to sexualize children.

In August, “Snyggingar” or “Mignonnes”, as it is called in its original language, premiered in France. The film follows 11-year-old Amy struggling between family values and the dance group she is a part of.

It was when the marketing of the film reached the United States that the storm of criticism was unleashed and it was called for a boycott by the streaming service. Netflix then came out and apologized for what the marketing of the film looked like, emphasizing that the film should be seen as a comment against the sexualization of young people. But after the premiere, criticism has recovered and, among others, Republican Ted Cruz has asked the Attorney General’s Office to investigate whether Netflix or the filmmakers have violated the law on “distribution of child pornography.”

  • One of the largest movie and series streaming services in the world.
  • In April 2020, Netflix had more than 182 million users worldwide.
  • The Swedes and the Internet survey in 2019 showed that more than half (58%) of Swedish Internet users watched Netflix.
