After the corona pandemic hit the aviation industry hard, the state-owned Swedavia company has investigated the conditions for prematurely closing Bromma airport. On Monday, the company submits a report to the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. The bottom line is that it is no longer profitable to operate the airport.
– Swedavia’s assessment is that, given the new market situation, it no longer has commercial motivations to continue operating Bromma and that a consolidation of air traffic in the Stockholm region to Stockholm Arlanda Airport is possible. However, it is a basic condition that Arlanda obtain long-term development conditions commensurate with the needs of society, says Åke Svensson, chairman of the Swedish board of directors, in a press release.
Despite the pandemic The long-term consequences are uncertain, there are many indications that the aviation market will undergo major changes, the company writes.
– The aviation market is in an unprecedented crisis. Bromma will likely have a capacity surplus due to low traffic volumes for a long time. The long-term cost of this would be borne by already injured travelers and airlines, which we do not consider possible, says Jonas Abrahamsson, Swedavia’s president and CEO, in the press release.
If Bromma airport were closed prematurely, Arlanda could take over short-term traffic without the need for major investments, according to Swedavia. However, the company believes that further investments will be necessary in the long term, including investments in another runway at the airport.
Finansborgarrådet In the city of Stockholm, Anna König Jerlmyr (M), believes that Swedavia’s message requires that the government now provide guarantees for the development of Arlanda.
– Both citizens and businesses depend on clear information about the development of the region, and now the government has a great responsibility to ensure the international competitiveness of Stockholm and Sweden, says Anna König Jerlmyr (M) in a press release.
– The government must now give the Swedish Transport Administration a clear assignment that a third parallel track and reinforced connections with trains and roads to Arlanda must be included in the national plan. Arlanda is currently not included as an object in the Swedish Transport Administration allocation at the national level, but must be added immediately when the competitiveness of the capital region is at stake.
Bromma Airport’s current lease with the City of Stockholm expires in 2038.
