SVT broadcast on what happens to the arrested protesters

Elin Jönsson, SVT Minsk correspondent, has met many Belarusians who have told her what awaits detainees:

– They are transported in various prisoner transports where they are often beaten with truncheons, kicks and blows. Arrested women are often told to rape them.

Travel for several hours

The journey usually takes several hours. They are then taken to a police station where they are locked in tight spaces in the basement. Often with more than 50 people in a room.

– They rarely get food and often a form of mock trial takes place that takes place on social media without the presence of a lawyer or a judge, says Elin Jönsson in Morgonstudion.

Forced to type in minutes

According to Elin Jönsson, the “trial” ends when detainees are forced to sign a police protocol that often contains incorrect information about where they were detained and what crimes they are considered to have committed. Some are immediately released, others are detained for up to 15 days.

On Monday, the pressured President of Belarus Lukashenko will meet with Vladimir Putin of Russia at a meeting in the Black Sea resort of Sochi. Russia has previously said leaders will discuss energy, trade and strategic partnerships.

There are many signs that the protests breaking out in Belarus will be another item on the agenda.
