TikTok is selling its US operations to software company Oracle, according to various media outlets, including the Financial Times and the Wall Street Journal.
Both Oracle and Microsoft had bid for TikTok, but the night before Monday, Bill Gates’ company announced that they had received the nob from owner ByteDance.
Instead, it will be Oracle, led by Donald Trump supporter Larry Ellison, who will be able to run TikTok in the United States, according to reports.
Ellison, 76, who is the sixth richest man in the world, has long been behind Trump and held a fundraising party at his home in February in support of the president’s election campaign.
TikTok “security threat”
Donald Trump gave the Chinese owners of TikTok until Sept. 20 to sell their business in the US to an American company, or banned it.
Trump believes the popular dance and video app, which collects large amounts of data from its users, poses a security threat.
Under Chinese law, TikTok’s owner ByteDance must share information with the dictatorship in Beijing if the state so wishes.
In India, TikTok has been banned since June and in Sweden, SVT employees, among others, have been banned from downloading TikTok on their work mobiles.
