Typically around 350 substitutes are needed a day in the city’s elementary schools, but that changed over a weekend in early September.
– Friday was as usual, but on Monday we were going to send around 500 substitutes and it didn’t work out, says Larisa Muslijovic, head of the SVT Primary School Administration personnel unit.
The reason for the large increase in the need for surrogates is the corona pandemic and the fact that staff are encouraged to stay home at the slightest symptom.
The shortage of substitutes is now so great that it affects teaching, some schools have had to cancel lessons and send children home earlier.
You haven’t gotten that far in Björkåsskolan in Västra Frölunda. On the other hand, it has been seen that additional resources for children who need additional support will be less when staff have to step in and take over other instruction.
According to the compulsory school administration staffing unit, the shortage of substitutes is the largest ever recorded and work is now under way to recruit new substitutes.
– We hope to have solved this in two weeks, says Larisa Muslijovic to SVT.
