On Friday August 4, the need was as usual for substitutes in Gothenburg primary schools. Approximately 350 substitutes per day. On Monday, September 7, the shortage of substitutes hit.
– Changed over a weekend. Friday was as usual, but on Monday we were going to send around 500 substitutes and it didn’t work out, says Larisa Muslijovic, head of the Primary School Administration personnel unit. Those who will provide substitutes for city schools.
Schools have had to cancel teaching
The reason is the corona pandemic and the rules of conduct that apply to staying home at the slightest symptom. Something you noticed at Björkåsskolan in Frölunda, among other places.
– Usually we need two to three substitutes a day. Now we need ten, says Anne Erefalk, head of the school.
Have you experienced something like this?
– Never.
Affects teaching
The shortage of substitutes, which is the largest by elementary school staffing unit, is so great that it affects teaching in the city’s elementary schools.
– There are schools that have had to cancel teaching and some schools have had to send children home earlier, says Larisa Muslijovic.
Extra resources disappear
At Björkåsskolan, they have not been allowed to cancel lessons. On the other hand, employees who would normally be extra resources in the classes were allowed to come in and take over the classes.
– We have fewer middle classes and fewer resources than we usually have, says Anne Erefalk.
Are the extra resources for the children who need it most the ones that disappear?
– Yes, I can probably say it is, says Anne Erefalk, Director of Björkåsskolan.
Work to find new substitutes
The primary and lower secondary school administration staffing unit is now working feverishly to find new substitutes. Announcements have been posted and applicants are currently being reviewed.
– We hope to have solved this in two weeks, says Larisa Muslijovic, head of the personnel unit of the Primary School Administration.
