Liverpool lost just two points at home to Anfield during last year’s season (1-1 against Burnley) when the club were proclaimed champions for the first time in the Premier League.
But in the home opener against newcomer Leeds, it looked like it would be an immediate miscalculation.
The home team had the lead three times, but only in the final minutes did Liverpool get rid of Marcelo Bielsa’s hard-working team.
Mohamed Salah, who scored 19 goals last season, needed just four minutes before opening the 2020/2021 goal tally. From the penalty spot, the ball thundered behind a hopeless Illan Meslier into Leeds’ goal.
But the guests, who are back in the top flight after 16 difficult years, are back. The receipt was not long in coming.
And so it went on. Virgil Van Dijk made it 2-1 with his forehead and a few minutes later he tied.
When Salah scored 3-2 after 33 minutes, many probably thought Liverpool would keep running.
But in the 66th minute, Polish Mateusz Klich tied it 3-3. In the end, it was another penalty that saved Jürgen Klopp’s men.
In minute 88 Salah stepped up for his third goal and went safety to 4-3.
– It was very hard. They (Leeds) pushed hard, so the intensity was really high. We did a good job, says the hero in the victory interview.
In the next round, Chelsea is now waiting.
