Just under 1,000 people have gathered in the French capital, Paris, to take part in two separate demonstrations organized by the Yellow West protest movement. Saturday’s protests are the first of their kind during the pandemic, and organizers hoped there would be many more participants.

– The movement is dead, I say how it is. But we are here because we have nothing to lose. This is a final expression of resistance, says Michael, a 43-year-old protester.

Police in riot gear stormed a demonstration on Friday, taking hundreds of protesters away by truck. Clashes broke out between the police and protesters and the police fired tear gas at the crowd.

By around 3 p.m., more than 190 people had been arrested, most because they had brought knives, axes, drills and other potentially dangerous tools.

The Yellow Vests soon plan to hold more demonstrations in other French cities, including Marseille, Toulouse, Lyon and Lille.
