The execution has drawn strong reactions from several different quarters. The United Associations for a Free Iran (FFFI) condemns Iran’s actions and at the same time calls on the Foreign Ministry to summon the Iranian ambassador to Stockholm.
– This is terrible and goes against all human rights, but also against international law. It has honestly gone too far when it comes to the silence of Swedish policy on the situation in Iran, FFFI president Mojtaba Ghotbi tells TT.
– We believe that Sweden, which promotes human rights, should take a position, but so far we have seen nothing. It’s been very quiet from (Foreign Minister) Ann Linde, she continues.
Saturday organizes organizing a protest action at Mynttorget in Stockholm due to the execution. The FFFI also wants to see Sweden, together with the EU and the UN, act to “hold the leaders of the Iranian regime accountable.”
The sports players organization World Players Association (WPA) also criticizes Iran for its actions. So does the International Olympic Committee (IOC), which states in a press release that the organization is in shock.
“It is deeply outrageous that despite the appeals of athletes around the world and all the IOC’s work behind the scenes with the Iranian Olympic Committee, the International Wrestling Federation and the Iranian Wrestling Federation, we failed to achieve our objective. Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Navid Afkari, “writes the IOC in a comment.
Fall of Navid Afkaris It has previously drawn international attention and, among others, US President Donald Trump has appealed for the punishment not to be carried out.
“To the leaders of Iran, I would really appreciate if you could spare this man’s life and not execute him,” Trump previously wrote on Twitter.
Afkari, 27, was arrested along with his two brothers in connection with a demonstration critical of the regime in the summer of 2018. He was then charged with stabbing an official in connection with the demonstration.
Following his arrest, there have been reports that he has been tortured into admitting his crime, something that, among other things, the BBC reported.
