GOTHENBURG. It was clear to the players when Roland Nilsson, 56, conducted his first training session for the IFK Gothenburg crisis team.
– It was a clear, direct and firm voice, says Jakob Johansson.
Ballon d’Or winner, World Cup bronze medalist and UEFA Cup champion Roland Nilsson led his first training session with IFK Gothenburg on Saturday.
Only the brief description above explains part of the difference compared to Representative Poya Asbaghi, 35, who prior to the Blåvitt assignment led Dalkurd and Gefle.
Returning national team midfielder Jakob Johansson describes Nilsson’s training (which was closed to the public and the media):
– It was really good. He knows what it takes. We need clarity and simplicity. Inspire confidence, says the midfielder.
No major changes
Roland Nilsson was equally straightforward when he answered questions in the rain to correspondents for Sportbladet, GT and Göteborgs-Posten.
– We look a bit at the defensive game, how we should organize ourselves and in the other direction, what we should think about in our attack game. You can’t do much in one day.
– Ferran and I sat for a long time yesterday (Friday), until a quarter to seven in the afternoon, and we argued. We watched some of our matches and we also saw a little bit of Falkenberg playing.
Does Pontus Wernbloom play Falkenberg from the start?
– We’ll see.
Game system?
– Tomorrow we’ll see tomorrow too! Nilsson says with a smile. There will be no major changes.
Won’t it be the classic IFK Gothenburg, 4-4-2, from the 1980s and 1990s: direct, physical, long?
– I have never played as a coach except for one game. Just because I played for that team is not my philosophy. I want to use the surfaces that the opponents offer and get us there in a fast and good way, it can be with a short pass game or something else depending on how it looks on the field.
Any details you pointed out?
– I want us to be a unit. It has been a bit scattered. Decisions have been made that have not been based on the way the team works.

Blue and white should avoid this
– We must not punish ourselves in any way which suddenly means that we have to run home 50 meters at full speed because we have opened ourselves in a way that we should not do or that we risk in the attack game that we do not need.
It is clear in advance that Hosam Aiesh is suspended and Sebastian Eriksson is injured ahead of Sunday’s background drama against Falkenberg. Giorgi Kharaishvili went too far in training, but Roland Nilsson wants to wait for any reaction from the Georgian.
– We have a template for tomorrow. When we know what the status of the players is tomorrow (Sunday), we will know who will start.
IFK Gothenburg are winless in 14 games and are just four points ahead of Allsvenskan’s Falkenberg jumbo jet.
Roland Nilsson has a team with a shattered self-confidence.
– Hopefully it makes the players feel that we are working in a positive direction. That there is the possibility of getting on a new train.
– But for me, playing football is demanding, in the right way. The requirements should be something that the players feel they can handle and that we do together. I’ll never do customs on that, says Roland Nilsson.
