The water was cut off in the eastern parts of central Gothenburg. Much of Kålltorp and Björkekärr lack water, affecting some 1,800 households.
– There was a crack in a water pipe and it needs to be replaced, says Helena Wall, water and cycle communications manager.
This led to Kålltorpsskolan, a primary school with just over 625 pupils, being forced to send its pupils home.
– That’s right, says the school principal, Olof Stigert.
The school did not have access to water, prompting the school administration, in consultation with the city administration, to send students and staff home.
Students sent home from Kålltorpsskolan
– So there are no leaks in the school, but the water has not returned. At 9.30 we made the decision to close the business. We can’t serve food and students can’t wash their hands or something, which is especially important now during the crown time, says Olof Stigert.
– A very special situation. I’ve worked in the business for 40 years and been a principal for 20. I don’t think I’ve ever had to send students and staff home before, says Olof Stigert.
According to Helena Wall at Kretslopp och water, the fault was rectified at 2 pm in the afternoon and the water was released again.
– It may discolor at first, so it might be good to rinse the tap until it’s clear again, he says.
In addition, those affected are encouraged to boil the water before drinking it.
– It’s a precautionary measure. We need to sample and analyze the water, he says, adding:
– It is valid until at least Saturday afternoon. But we will come out with information by text message and through the website.
“The cars basically drowned”
Jessica Carlsson is one of the people who has been affected by the water leak. She says a neighbor woke her up in the middle of the night.
– He said our cars spilled water. Yes, of course they thought: “it’s raining a little.” Then I peeked out the window and saw that both cars are basically soaked down to the driver’s doors and more, she says.
Since three o’clock the night before, she’s been up trying to save valuables and talking to insurance companies. She says the water also ran into the basement and garage of the property, which consists of three apartments and a studio.
In GP’s broadcast (which can be seen at the top of the article) from the location, he points to the mark on the garage wall that shows the height of the water: one meter.
– When the firefighters finally got the water out and we turned it on, water came out of the garage. Everything on the ground here is affected. Now it’s a garage and it’s about bicycles and things that hold water, but we haven’t been through everything.
A remediation company and representatives from both the insurance company and the city of Gothenburg were present.
– The cleaners have already been here and it feels incredibly nice, says Jessica Carlsson.
But now a great deal of finishing work awaits.
– Someone said we’ll have to dry out next month. So the water leaked through the walls indoors, so there’s probably a lot that needs to be checked, at the very least, says Jessica Carlsson.
