Three people are suspected of causing the death of another person by a crime in the workplace. This since a six-year-old drowned in Falsterbo during a sports lesson.
– We have notified the three educators, who were present at that time, the suspicion of crime, says the prosecutor Klas Norelius.
Light outside the pool door.
It was when a group of students took a bath during a sports lesson on August 18 that they found the lifeless boy at the bottom of the pool. Emergency services were called to the scene, but his life could not be saved.
Since then, several investigations have been conducted.
The suspects are the three educators who were present during the sports lesson.
– So far we have had interrogations with two of them. We haven’t heard the third yet, says Klas Norelius.
He is silent about what has led him to choose now to notify them of the suspicion.
– The secrecy of the preliminary investigation prevails. Based on the circumstances in which a crime may be suspected, it is correct to report the suspicion.
All three have been assigned public defenders.
– It is a way of ensuring that those questioned understand what it is about and what rights they have. As a suspect, for example, you may choose to remain silent and perhaps act differently than if you were questioned as a witness, Klas Norelius says.
The police will continue the interrogations and obtain technical evidence.
– This can go on for a long time, maybe all fall. We need to find out who has been responsible and analyze the entire chain of responsibilities. The fact that we have notified you of suspicions is not the same as prosecuting you.
Can you prosecute more or other people?
– That may be, it is about who was responsible, says Klas Norelius.
None of the three suspects are in custody.
– My client denies the crime, says lawyer Isak Åberg, who represents one of the educators.
The newspaper has also sought out the other two representatives, who do not respond or do not want to comment at this time.
The prosecutor is now also looking similar events, such as a drowning accident in Tomelilla eleven years ago, when a child drowned during a leisure activity. Later, an educator was convicted of causing the death of another person.
The Swedish Work Environment Authority and the municipality of Vellinge have also launched investigations into the incident. The municipality must, among other things, analyze whether its guidelines for how many adults should be present when children bathe may have affected the outcome. At the time of the drowning accident, three educators were together with forty children bathing. The Swedish Work Environment Authority has carried out an on-site inspection and is investigating whether the school has operated in accordance with the Work Environment Act.
Vellinge Acting Director of Education Charlotte Sjödahl She says the information contacted her on Friday afternoon.
– We have to keep analyzing this. It is not clear what we will do now, we must face it.
Are the three educators on call?
– So far they have been in service, but not in a group of children. I cannot answer what is happening now, we will make a decision next week.
Otherwise, you do not want to comment on the case or the suspicions against the employees.
