Ikea furniture is popular and coveted, especially on the second-hand market.

Now Ikea is taking a further step towards its sustainability goal and opening the world’s first second-hand store with only Ikea furniture, in Sweden.

At Blocket and Marketplace, among others, Ikea furniture is highly sought after, and many of Ikea’s design classics also have high resale value. Ikea was even the most sought-after brand at Blocket 2018. Many look to Ikea furniture, which is also often easier to buy used because it avoids assembly.

Now Ikea is making a new investment when it will start selling its own furniture, used, and thus opens the doors to a completely new store.

– At Ikea, we want to be part of leading the transition to a more sustainable and just Sweden. If we want to achieve our sustainability goals, we must challenge ourselves and test our ideas in practice. Climate change cannot be solved in theory, it must be solved with good examples in everyday life, says Jonas Carlehed, head of sustainability at Ikea Sweden, in a press release.

Ikea Thrift Store to Open in Fall 2020 in Eskilstuna

Within ten years, all Ikea products must be made from renewable or recycled materials. Products must also be designed based on circular thinking and therefore must be designed to be reused, resold or recycled. It will also be easier for customers to extend the life of their furniture and products.

The new second-hand store, which is the first in the world to be tested by Ikea, will open in fall 2020 and will be located in Esklistuna’s ReTuna recycling center. Here you should only be able to buy Ikea devices that have been given new life after being repaired or restored to their former glory, but of course at a much lower price.

– Our planet is our common home. Therefore, we can only create a more sustainable world if we do it together with others. We are now connecting with local stakeholders who share our views on sustainability to learn lessons that can make a difference globally, says Jonas Carlehed, in the press release.

It is no accident that the store opens in ReTuna in Eskilstuna. ReTuna is similar to other shopping centers, with a big difference being that it is located next to the local recycling station and everything that the stores sell is recycled, recycled, organic or produced in a sustainable way.
