More criticism of the statement on clans

Mats Löfving’s statement on the clans is criticized internally within the police.
There are also strong objections from a political point of view.

Deputy Chief of the National Police Mats Löfving’s statement in Ekot’s interview on Saturday has taken hold in this week’s debate.
But not everyone shares the police chief’s opinion on the situation.
Linda Snecker (V) is a member of the Riksdag’s Justice Committee, which deals with police matters. She questions the use of the word “clan”.
– Mats Löfving has delivered a social image that many want it to be. Where people like to link ethnicity and crime and equate these phenomena, she says.

Connected with people outside of Sweden
What does it say about ethnicity?
– Use words like clan. In the Swedish context, it does not mean family, but something that, linguistically, we establish a connection with people who come from outside Sweden.
Can there be ethnically Swedish clans?
– Yes, but most of the time we use other words. Words are important, especially in trusting the police. Words like this can undermine several years of work that police have worked with in vulnerable areas, it would be very regrettable.
A survey Ekot has done of the seven regional police intelligence units shows that more people question Löfving’s reasoning. The fact that you belong to a large family or a family very involved in crime does not necessarily mean that everyone in the family is criminal, it is an objection that stands out.

Makes a great impression on the debate
Linda Snecker shares the criticism and believes that Löfving’s formulation was unfortunate. She doesn’t want to speculate what was behind the choice of words.
– I don’t know Mats Löfving. What he said must represent him. But I trust police officers who work in vulnerable areas. I am very impressed with your work.
If there are 40 families involved in the crime, isn’t it important that the police come out with that so that the citizens get information?
– I think it is very important for the police to report what crime is like in Sweden, but it is also a task that requires a lot of reflection and thought. It’s like being a politician and presenting political proposals. It makes a big impression on the political debate.
M: Frivolous left
On September 29, the Justice Committee plans to have a meeting to which the Chief of the National Police, Anders Thornberg, has been invited. The committee chair, Fredrik Lundh Sammeli (S), writes in a text message to Aftonbladet:
“In the fight against criminal networks, we do not enjoy simplified images or sharp tones. I hope that the authority will come to the committee and report on the statement and the situation. “
Johan Forssell (M), a member of the justice committee, believes that it is good for the police to speak plain language.
– It is very revealing that when the police remove the magazine from their mouths and describe the daily life that many people encounter, the first reaction of the left is to embarrass the police. It is frivolous.
Aftonbladet has unsuccessfully sought out Mats Löfving for comment.
