Today, Polarbröd is struggling to bake as much bread as possible at its second bakery in Bredbyn, after the fire at the Älvsbyn plant destroyed much of the production. But there is light in the dark.
During the autumn, the company will invest SEK 9 million to start up a sandwich production plant in Älvsbyn. Manufacturing, in turn, means that it opens up to about 20 jobs.
“Symbolically important”
– This is symbolically important because it concerns activities in Älvsbyn. In no time we can start making sandwiches again. It’s a lot of fun, says Karin Bodin.
The production that starts will be from the company’s ready-made sandwiches that are sold, among others, to industrial customers such as trains or airlines, and to Pressbyrån and 7-Eleven.
Growing market
Prepackaged sandwiches are a growing market, especially now during the pandemic, when the entire society is very careful about hygiene. It is also easier to start with the production of these products than to bake bread. A new bakery requires higher investments and takes more time.
When Polarbröd starts making sandwiches, Karin Bodin can’t answer.
– We do not have the schedule completely ready, but it will be during the fall.
