A wolf that has attacked several sheep in northern Skåne is not considered genetically valuable to the Swedish wolf population, according to a DNA analysis. This means that protection hunting may become relevant, local media report.
On three different occasions this weekend, the wolf attacked and killed several sheep in the Osby area. The analysis commissioned by the county administrative board shows that it is a young dog from a territory in Gävleborg, which has also been guilty of attacks in Örebro county, Västra Götaland county and Jönköping county between May and July. this year. The dog may also be related to an attack in Kronoberg County last week, but there are no test results there yet.
The evaluation of whether it is possible to speak of hunting with protection takes into account the genetic importance of the wolf for the Swedish wolf population, which has problems with inbreeding.
The Swedish Farmers Association (LRF) has submitted a protection hunting application and since the wolf is not considered genetically valuable, the organization wants the county administrative board to make a decision as soon as possible.
“We have now put together a hunting leader if it will be protection hunting, so be prepared,” Jan Hultgren, business developer at LRF Skåne, told TT earlier this week.
The County Administrative Board says a decision will be made soon on a possible protection hunt.
