Jens Gustafsson and Roland Nilsson.
GOTHENBURG. It has been a week since IFK Gothenburg fired Poya Asbaghi.
Now Sportbladet can reveal why a replacement is delayed.
The reason: a big crack in the club’s management.
A week ago, Poya Asbaghi was fired as IFK Gothenburg coach.
When the announcement was officially made at a press conference, club director Max Markusson said at the same time that the goal was for a new manager to come forward until the next match, that is, today when IFK Gothenburg faces off against Hammarby on Thursday night.
According to information from Sportbladet, IFK Norrköping coach Jens Gustafsson was the main candidate, but for various reasons the negotiations have dragged on.
Now, on the other hand, the captain of the U21 team, Roland Nilsson, has sailed as an alternative. Something about what Expressen wrote on Wednesday.
Big crack
But according to Sportbladet sources, there is a large gap within IFK Gothenburg’s management where the group that now defends Roland Nilsson has bypassed the club’s sports council and parts of the board that clearly defended and decided to focus interest on Jens Gustafsson.
So it came as a surprise to some board members when all of a sudden, Roland Nilsson in the media was singled out as the new top candidate to take office at IFK Gothenburg.
Trade with SvFF
According to information from Sportbladet, IFK Gothenburg representatives have also started negotiations with the Swedish Football Association on how to release Roland Nilsson from the deal as national captain of the U21 team.
Nilsson’s contract expires at the end of the year and there are four games left in the European Under-21 Championship qualifying rounds.
Opinions were already divided within the club’s leadership just over a week ago on which path IFK Gothenburg would take on the subject of coaches.
Two sports managers Kennet Andersson and Pontus Farnerud wanted to give Poya Asbaghi more matches with returning newcomers and player reinforcements to reverse the negative trend, but the board made the decision above the heads of the duo that Asbaghi Should be fired.
IFK Gothenburg club director Max Markusson rejects the information:
– We fully agree on who we want as a coach at IFK Gothenburg.
Is it Roland Nilsson now?
– I don’t comment on names, says Markusson.
Various names have been discussed
However, the IFK Gothenburg club director confirms that several different names have come under close scrutiny.
– The directive has commissioned the Sports Council to study the different alternatives. You look at different facts, you go round and round, you argue and then you come up with an alternative where you drive. There we are now.
– So the way those discussions are conducted is completely uninteresting to discuss in public. But I can flatly deny that there are now different points of view on the subject of coaching. We agree, says Markusson.
