GOTHENBURG. IFK Gothenburg need three points in Thursday’s home game against Hammarby.
34-year-old Pontus Wernbloom believes the match will be decisive.
– If we win that match, we can probably win the match too, says the profile to Fotbollskanalen.
An IFK from Gothenburg that has gone 13 straight games in the Allsvenskan without a win is at table seven Hammarby, who is also unhappy with his season so far.
– It will be a tough battle. It is Bajen and they are good. I hope we can win, says Pontus Wernbloom, former player of Blåvitt’s national team.
The veteran has made two appearances since returning. He had to jump out against Djurgården and started in the away game against Mjällby before the break.
– It went straight into the hot air. Then all of a sudden it was free time and then the coach had to leave. It is clear that there have been many ups and downs since I arrived. But it’s good to go back and get a lyre. It feels fun, he says.
According to Wernbloom, the form feels better and better.
– It’s on the rise. I’ve been able to participate and train all the time, so it feels great, he says.
Head coach Poya Asbaghi has had to leave and Kennet Andersson has been replaced by Pontus Farnerud as sporting director. The IFK player admits that the past has been turbulent.
– Yes, but it’s a business. It is very boring when it happens. But we have to go ahead and try to win games. That is what we can do. What the club does is up to them. We are here training. We will win games and if we win games, everything will be fine in the end. Then nobody gets fired or anything like that, he says.
Has it been different with Ferran Sibila and Alf Westerberg as coaches?
– It has been such a short time, so it is difficult to say if something is different. It’s only been a few training sessions, says Pontus Wernbloom.
He says he doesn’t know what role he will play against Hammarby.
– I have no idea where I can play! We will see. It really depends on the coach (Ferran Sibila). He is the one who decides, he says.
It’s pretty clear IFK Gothenburg is crying out for a complete scorer.
– A win against Hammarby would mean a lot. At some point it has to come and we have to work hard to make it come. We have made some changes and will see if it improves or worsens. I just hope we win games, because that’s what it’s all about, says the 34-year-old.
He believes the key to victory will be not giving Hammarby’s skilled ball players room and being the strongest in the duel game.
– We have to be physical, because Hammarby is a good team that rolls the ball. If we win that match, we should probably be able to win the match too, he says.
Do you feel there is additional pressure on your returnees? that you should flip this steak?
– No, I do not know. I think there is pressure on the whole team. There are no returnees who can do it themselves, but it is the whole team that must do it together. We have to get together as a group and start winning games. We can only do that together. We’ll help with that, responds Pontus Wernbloom.
The match between IFK Gothenburg and Hammarby starts at 19.00 in Gamla Ullevi. Blåvitt misses the suspended August Erlingmark and the injured trio Sebastian Eriksson, Emil Holm and Robin Söder, but recovers Giorgij Charaisjvili and Mattias Bjärsmyr from injury.
