Alexei Navalny is being treated in a Berlin hospital,
US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo says there is a high risk that the poisoning of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny was ordered by high-ranking Russian leaders.
– I think people all over the world see these types of events for what they are, says Pompeo in a radio interview and continues:
– I don’t think it’s good for the Russian people.
Navalny fell ill on a flight between Siberian Tomsk and Moscow on August 20 and the plane made an emergency landing in Omsk. His co-workers immediately said they thought Navalny was poisoned when he drank a cup of tea at the airport and the Omsk hospital admitted him to the toxicology department.
Two days later, Navalny flew to Berlin to be treated at the Charité Hospital. He has been awakened from the artificial coma he has been put into and is responding to the charges, the Berlin hospital announced on Monday.
Pompeo says the United States wants to help find out who is to blame.
– This is something that we will see, that we will evaluate and we will do everything possible to reduce the risk of similar things happening again.
US President Donald Trump has previously said that he has not seen any evidence that Navalny was poisoned.
