The fire in Borgstena started in a large storage room with chips and pellets, but spread through a vent pipe to a production facility at the sawmill on Wednesday afternoon.
During the night, the rescue service was able to control the fire in the production facility, but prepared for a long effort to protect the storage, where chips and pellets still glowed.
– Surely it will last several days, because it is a quite large pile of chips. So there will be a force in place overnight, and quite a long effort for us, says Per Fägersten, internal commander of the Södra Älvsborgs rescue services association.
In the afternoon it was issued a so-called Important Message to the Public (VMA) for the residents of the area. Residents were asked to close windows and vents to prevent smoke from entering. But in the evening, the danger was deemed to have passed.
The rescue service received an automatic alarm about the fire at 3 p.m. Wednesday. Several employees of the sawmill also work in the Borgstena rescue service and were able to help with the extinguishing work.
It is not yet clear what caused the fire, but police have launched a preliminary investigation for general negligence. No one was injured and the rescue service also does not appreciate that the sawmill was damaged by the fire, in addition to the warehouse that caught fire.
