Even before the first coronavirus death in the United States, Donald Trump should have known about the risks of the virus. The evidence comes in a new book by journalist Bob Woodward, reports the Washington Post and CNN, among others.
In an interview with Woodward on February 7, Woodward said:
– This is deadly.
In subsequent interviews, Trump is said to have said he had great knowledge about the threat of the virus and that it could be five times more deadly than the flu.
But at the same time, Trump’s message to the outside world was different. Among other things, the president compared the virus to the common flu and said it would “soon disappear.”
Trump: “I wanted to downplay it”
In Woodward’s new book, Trump admits he downplayed the severity of the coronavirus. The statement comes in an interview on March 19, just days after the United States declared a national emergency due to COVID-19.
“I always wanted to downplay it,” Trump said in the interview, according to CNN.
He continues:
– I still like to downplay it, because I don’t want to panic.
