UHR CEO Karin Röding resigns

– I am resigning because there have been too many trips and the government has acted too late. The decisions made by the government on August 27 were contained in a memorandum that we presented in May. So it becomes very surprising when I hear the Prime Minister say that she came up with this herself in August, says Karin Röding.

Earlier this week he decided that the government transfer responsibility for the examination of the 21 institutions of higher education to the UHR only. It was also announced that a national coordinator will be appointed, who will assist UHR in conducting the testing in both the fall and spring and will be conducted in an infection-proof manner.

But the UHR and the higher education institutions that organize the test are behind the assessment that the test cannot be performed in an infectious manner. In this matter, the government has not followed the principle of responsibility to listen to the expert authorities, says Karin Röding.

– There are 22 authorities who say that it is not appropriate to perform the test for infection safety reasons. The government’s response to this is to transfer responsibility to UHR, which has never conducted such a test. Then it must be done together with the national coordinator whom I perceive as a coat. Then I will be responsible for the implementation of the test, but not the powers and I cannot accept that.

Karin Röding describes the government Work on the question of the university exam impregnated with “factual resistance”. He also perceives it as if the government has allowed itself to be controlled by other parties.

This fall’s university entrance exam would have been written on October 18. The new date is not yet clear.

Matilda Ernkrans (C), Minister for higher education and research, he says it is sad that Karin Röding decides to resign. She believes that leaving does not affect her chances of completing a college entrance exam this fall.

– I am very confident that the work of the authority will continue. I will announce the name of the national coordinator shortly, he tells DN.

He does not agree that the government has let other parliamentary parties pursue the issue of taking the university entrance exam in recent months.

– No matter how it twists and turns, there is a majority in the Riksdag that we will take a college entrance exam this fall and the government has been actively working for that, he says.

Is there anything you can agree on with Karin Röding that you feel self-critical about?

– No, I don’t share the photo. Actually, I think it’s a bit silly. Neither the government, UHR nor anyone else has been able to predict how the situation will develop and the government has acted on the basis of the current situation. In my view, the government has provided new conditions to be able to test infectiously.

The relationship with the government has been strained for a long time, Karin Röding told TT. How do you think the collaboration with UHR and its CEO has worked?

– There are different images of how to handle the demands that are imposed on all of us at this time. I know a lot of solutions have been discussed and I’ve felt the CEO’s focus has been more on what’s complicated and difficult rather than solution-oriented, so we have slightly different images of how to handle the situation. But overall, the government’s work with responsible authorities has been constructive and good.
