Government: residents in vulnerable areas will be counted

The Swedish Tax Agency will strengthen the population register in vulnerable areas. The government and the coalition parties Centern and Liberalerna allocated 63 million Swedish crowns to strengthen the population register in highly overcrowded areas.

Prime Minister Stefan Löfven confirmed on Wednesday that there will be an investment in the census in the fall budget, but leaves the details about it to the responsible ministry and the authority to handle it.

– It is important to know who lives here. But I don’t think we can do what we have done before, time has passed and technology has changed, says Stefan Löfven.

Both liberals and moderates have demanded a new census and both SD and KD have gone the same way. The Prime Minister has no idea when a census may be necessary.

– I can not say that. But the main message is that we must keep track of who lives in our country and where they live. But exactly how, when and what should be done and what steps should be allowed to think of those who are going to implement it, says Stefan Löfven.

A few hours later Löfven’s message summoned the moderates to a press conference on the same topic.

– We want to keep track of which people live in the country and that the people who are written here really also live here. And that people do not receive benefits to which they are not entitled and that they do not hide different identities in different directions, says M leader Ulf Kristersson.

Civil Affairs Minister Lena Micko (S) opened for a larger census during a debate against Ulf Kristersson in August and several Social Democratic city leaders have called for one. On Thursday, the moderates will present their census proposal to the Riksdag’s tax commission.

Is it really a conflict problem?

– The ruling party voted no the last time but I perceive that now they are more positive. This is a clear way of saying that if the government does not make the decision that we think the government really wants to make, we will make it for them, he says.

The moderates believe that the government’s variant of selecting certain areas for the census is far from sufficient to overcome, among other things, subsidy crimes and the double identity of criminals.

– Much of our welfare system is linked to the population register. If it has not been verified, it should not be considered registered. There will be a strong incentive to provide correct information, says Niklas Wykman, fiscal policy spokesman (M).

The party estimates that carrying out a full census in Sweden next year would cost around 500 million, mostly in resources for the Swedish Tax Agency and municipalities.
