By allowing mobile phones to swiftly rotate between different companies, among other things, scammers are suspected of having hijacked billions in a tangle currently being amassed by various authorities.
Experts have judged that this may be the largest fraud scandal to ever hit Sweden. The Swedish Tax Agency has estimated the state’s loss at three billion, but SVT’s survey shows that the actual sum may be higher.
The Swedish Tax Agency alerted government offices early on about the ongoing crime and suggested that the fraud should be made more difficult by changing the rules for paying VAT.
Move VAT responsibility
During the year a bill was drawn up, which has now been sent to the Legal Council. By shifting the VAT obligation from the seller to the buyer, it is hoped that the arrangement used on the parcel can be avoided.
– It happens in several stages and it goes very fast, so we think that legislation could help to stop this effectively, says Liz Kelenius, section manager of the Swedish Tax Agency.
– The VAT deducted will be a pure profit that can be used to unload prices and leave the competition out of the game.
