Corona: Astra Zeneca pauses vaccine testing

Astra Zeneca has started phase 3 of the testing of its new corona vaccine. Several countries have already signed agreements with the pharmaceutical company, which guarantees access to the vaccine if it is approved. Stakeholders include the EU and Sweden.

But on Tuesday night, Astra Zeneca announced that tests for the corona vaccine were suspended. One of the people who took part in the tests in the UK is said to have developed a “potentially unexplained illness”.

In a statement, an Astra Zeneca spokesperson said it was a “routine action to be taken when potentially unexplained illness occurs during a test.”

Sweden has an agreement on 6 million doses

The statement does not elaborate on what type of illness the person has suffered. It is also unclear how long the vaccine will be on hold and if this will pose problems for the long-term production of Astra Zeneca.

However, the spokesperson claims that the pharmaceutical company “works to expedite the investigation of the individual incident in order to minimize any impact on the testing time frame,” reports the drug site Stat.

The Swedish-EU agreement with Astra Zeneca includes a total of 300 million doses to be distributed among the countries within the agreement.

The Minister of Social Affairs, Lena Hallengren, has previously announced that the agreement will involve 6 million doses for Sweden. It will be enough for between 3 and 6 million Swedes.

The plan in Sweden is to prioritize risk groups first.
