The government agreed with the coalition parties of the Center Party and the Liberals to introduce a conversion premium for fossil fuel cars that are converted to run on biofuels or biogas.
The support can be requested in 2021 and the first payments can be made in 2022, depending on the proposal.
– It is an effective way to ensure that all the cars that today circulate on the streets and are completely dependent on fossil fuels can become environmentally friendly cars. It’s also a very good way for those who depend on a car to be able, with very little rebuild and low cost, to turn it into a green car and drive with a clear conscience, says Green Party spokesman Per Bolund, also Minister of Finance and Living place.
– It is also a way to ensure that even those who cannot afford to buy an electric car can take part in the conversion of the traffic system.
The premium will cover half the cost of the conversion, which amounts to around SEK 10,000 per car. The investment is capped annually at 10 million SEK per year during 2022 and 2023, which means that around 2,000 premiums can be paid annually.
– It’s a calculation based on how it looked in other countries when conversion support was introduced. The idea is that we can then scale it when demand increases, says Bolund.
