A Turkish court sentenced the main suspect in the attack on a nightclub in Istanbul to life imprisonment, several times.

A total of 39 people lost their lives when the man, an Uzbek citizen, opened fire outside and inside the Reina nightclub on New Year’s Eve 2017.

Abdulkadir Masharipov was sentenced to 40 life sentences, one for each death and one for the massacre itself.

The court also sentenced an accomplice to life in prison for being involved in planning the act, according to the Turkish state news agency Anadolu.

The terrorist group IS claimed from the beginning that they were behind the deadly act.

The perpetrator arrived at the popular nightclub by taxi, just over an hour after noon. He shot dead a policeman and another person at the entrance. He then fired 120 shots inside the club on the banks of the Bosphorus.

About two-thirds of the dead were foreigners. Another 65 people were injured.
