Carl-Henning Wijkmark made his fictional debut with “Jägarna på Karinhall” in 1972, a story about violence and sexuality in Nazism. In 2007, he received the August award for the novel “Impressive Night”, which takes place in a hospital and is about the last hours of life. Wijkmark’s latest novel “See you again in the next dream” came in 2013.
– It is a fine and respectful authorship. And it is interesting that the one who was so old had good productivity even in old age. – It’s been 15 years since I read it but the feeling of the book remains. Is not always that way.
“Swedish at heart and soul”
Already with the debut, Carl-Henning Wijkmark was a great writer, says Håkan Bravinger, literary director of Norstedts. For the rest, think that “Dressinen” is a good start for those who want to know the authorship.
– It is a book that you have rarely seen in Swedish literature, it is the great European literature. He was a great European writer but with a Swedish heart, he says.
For longer periods, Carl-Henning Wijkmark lived in Germany and France, countries where he was also occasionally highly acclaimed, according to Bravinger.
– He was not directly innovative, but managed a great European cultural heritage, like Claudio Magris or Orhan Pamuk do, says Bravinger.
Serious and funny
Håkan Bravinger describes Carl-Henning Wijkmark as a “serious man with great humor”.
– But you met him before the humor came out. It’s like with your books. There is always a serious tone to them, but there is also a lot of humanity there. He was interested in the human psyche and the recurring theme of searching for its origins and understanding trends in society that were difficult to understand, says Håkan Bravinger.
Author and translator Kristoffer Leandoer describes it as “an era that has ended.”
– I greatly admired him as a writer and translator. He opened up the world and made Sweden and Swedish literature bigger by being curious all the time. He took it into an international context, says and continues:
– And he was a gentleman and an elegant man. Both as a writer and as a person, he was a man of enormous integrity.
Carl-Henning Wijkmark has also served as a translator and literary critic, and has been translated by Nietzsche and Walter Benjamin, among others.

Carl-Henning Wijkmark was born in 1934 in Stockholm. He made his fiction debut with “Jägarna på Karinhall” in 1972.
With later novels, such as “The Dress” (1983) and “Last Days” (1986), he consolidated his position as an unmistakable and headstrong writer.
In 1994 he published “Dacapo” and in 2002 “The Black Wall”. He has also published the volumes of the collection “Literature and human value: essays 1977–87” (1988) and “The past behind us” (2005), a collection of essays and commentaries from 1992 to 2004.
In 2007, Wijkmark received the August award for “The Moment of the Night”. Her latest novel is “See you again in the next dream” from 2013.
Wijkmark was also active as a literary critic and translator. Among other things, he has translated Nietzsche and Walter Benjamin.
He died on September 4, 2020.
