It was a messy Formula 1 race on the classic Monza track in Italy. Lewis Hamilton was on his way to his 90th win when he entered the depot not realizing he was flashing red on the posts at the edge of the bank.
The depot was closed to drivers after an incident on the track and for that infraction, Hamilton was given a time penalty that made it impossible for him to win the race. The Brit finally finished in seventh place.
When Hamilton disappeared off the game and teammate Valtteri Bottas had a bad day, it was time for a blast.
Pierre Gasly fought a tough duel against Spaniard Carlos Sainz for the victory, but the McLaren driver was unable to drive again and finished 41 hundredths behind the Frenchman.
– Honestly, it’s absolutely amazing. I don’t think I understand what is happening now. It was such a crazy race, says the Alpha Tauri driver in the victory interview after the race.
For Gasly, the win is a sensational rematch after last year when he was pulled from the Red Bull stable mid-season. The 24-year-old has now become the first Frenchman to win a Formula 1 race since 1996.
– I’ve been with a lot for the last 18 months. Imagine being able to win your first Formula 1 race at Monza, says Gasly.
– I find it difficult to understand this, continue.
Ferrari’s bitter weekend On the home track, Monza continued even on Sunday. Sebastian Vettel had to break after the brakes stopped working and Charles Leclerc crashed so violently into the protective barrier that the race had to be stopped and restarted just half an hour later. Leclerc survived unscathed.
Through the Alpha Tauri stable, it was still an Italian victory at Monzabanan.
