The health sector will receive more knowledge support to carry out vaccinations.
The Swedish Public Health Agency has been alerted to the lack of competition and the Swedish Infectious Diseases Society plans to produce new national recommendations.
The association has developed several so-called national care programs for various diseases, for example covid-19. The programs contain recommendations that are directed directly to health. But one thing that has been requested is special advice on vaccinations.
– This has been a proposal from members of the association who are good at vaccines, says Lars-Magnus Andersson, president of the Swedish Association for Infectious Diseases.

Recommendations must be written by a designated group. Until then, the association does not want to comment on what needs the care program should cover and what exactly it should contain.
– Basically it is about the vaccines we provide in addition to the childhood vaccination program. We need a professional consensus document on this, says Andersson.
TT: But is it about how healthcare should carry out vaccines?
– A little like that. New vaccines to come and evaluate those studies. But the limits are not set.
The fact that work is beginning on the new recommendations is not related to the possible mass vaccination of the covid-19 that is waiting.
– It has nothing to do with that. It’s a long-term project that we’ve been discussing for over a year, says Lars-Magnus Andersson.
Positive FHM
The Swedish Public Health Agency has a central role in the field of vaccination. In its status report last year, the authority writes that the “actors” point to several knowledge gaps. Therefore, the initiative of the Infectious Diseases Association is welcomed by Sören Andersson, who is the head of the vaccination programs unit of the Public Health Agency.
– It is good that the profession takes the initiative to participate in this type of topic. It contributes to the routines being consistent throughout the country and in tune with the best knowledge of the moment. We are happy to be part of the process, he says.
The Swedish Public Health Agency’s picture of the situation calls for recommendations on vaccination against TBE and chicken pox, among other things, which have had to be reversed during the pandemic.
It also points out that health professionals lack knowledge in the field of vaccination and that, according to several, “competency requirements for vaccination should be established.”
– Up to a point I agree. This applies especially to travel vaccinations that are carried out outside of normal care. Different ways of offering opportunities for skills development for those active in the area have been discussed. Many are very competent, but I think it may be necessary to standardize the tips and designs, says Sören Andersson.
