Melwin Lycke Holm, 15, has made a lot of impression during the season. In early August, the high jump talent set a new personal record at the National Team Challenge in Söderhamn, where he achieved a total of 2.17.
A week later, Lycke Holm took home the gold in senior-SM and after the competition burst into tears in the arms of dad and coach Stefan Holm.
Melwin Lycke Holm had a slightly heavier day when the high jump at Finnkampen was decided on Saturday. The 15-year-old had two takedowns of 2.09 and 2.12, which he made on the last try.
SVT expert Kajsa Bergqvist noted some negligence in technology on the part of talent during the Finnkamp deal.
– You are wrong in these last steps and are frustrated. He looks a little different almost every jump he takes. But it took 2.09 and 2.12 on the last few attempts, says Bergqvist.
Lycke Holm broke at 2.14 and finished fourth in the competition.
Emil Uhlin finished second in the competition, also achieved 2.12 but had fewer tears than his colleague from the national team. Height was a new personal best for Uhlin.
Finn Arttu Mattila took home the competition, and Finland won the event 12-10.
Lycke Holm: “It was an honor”
– Fighting today, I can tell. It was stressful, I can tell. I also did 2.05 with shaking. It wasn’t much that was true, but it was nice to get 2.12 anyway, Lycke Holm tells SVT after the competition.
The 15-year-old was honored to have been selected.
– It was great, it was an honor to skip it. So it’s a shame things are going so badly, says Melwin Lycke Holm to SVT after the competition.
– I jumped very well in the jump, but then it was with a short approach. I didn’t get the long focus to work, I haven’t been able to train as I wanted. It has been worn down on the body.
SVT expert Alhaji Jeng reacted to the competition’s television footage, when Lycke Holm uploaded them before jumping.
– You remember Stefan a lot in the way he moves. He does not yet have physical ability, but succeeds with other qualities, says the expert, who also praised the fact that Lycke Holm was brought to Finnkampen when he was 15 years old.
– A bit unbelievable, inconceivable that he is 15 years old and makes his Finnkampen senior debut.
