The island of Sardinia is known for its crystal clear water, seen here outside the town of Chia. Stock Photography.
Decadent sunny days on luxury yachts, resonant glass, and glamorous parties.
But with the corona virus an uninvited guest, the savory luxury life along the Costa Smeralda now has a bitter aftertaste.
The curve points up in Italy.
Former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi and his family were hospitalized earlier this week after they were confirmed to be infected with Covid-19 after a trip to the exclusive Costa Smeralda. But he is far from the only one affected by the crown after a long vacation on the white beaches of Sardinia.
The island, known for attracting wealthy jet-setters from around the world, was quite spared during the pandemic, which claimed many lives in Lombardy in northern Italy in March.
In April, the country managed to curb the spread of the infection. But as more and more tourists make pilgrimages to enjoy Sardinia’s turquoise sea and glittering nightlife, infection rates in Italy have risen again.
R number increases
On August 22, Rome reported 215 new crown drops in one day, the highest number since March. Most of the cases could be related to holiday trips to Sardinia in particular, reports TT.
The number of confirmed cases in the country has increased for the fifth week in a row and Italy’s R number, that is, to how many people it is estimated that a person infected with corona transmits the virus, has risen to 1.18. The highest R number is in the country of Sardinia, where each virus carrier is now expected to spread the infection to 1.99 people according to the Italian Corriere della Sera.
The spread of the infection is higher among young adults, the average age among newly infected in the country is 32 years. Something that has led experts to criticize parties and other social contexts where young people are.
Local newspapers are now reporting on the “curse” that has been resting on the Costa Smeralda since August. Images showing how the rich and famous table dances have upset the country, especially when mouth guards are a must in Rome.
At the Billionare nightclub owned by businessman Flavio Briatores, thousands celebrated in August as if the pandemic had never happened. But since 60 people were infected at the club, including several employees, Briatore has been forced to close the business.
He wants to save tourism
Italian authorities are now trying to trace the infection among national and international celebrities who have visited the club.
Flavio Briatore himself has said that the infection in Sardinia comes from tourists. At the same time, Christian Solinas, the governor of Sardinia, warned of declining tourist income, saying that reports of increased proliferation are exaggerated.
– Cancellations increase after a situation described with absolute falsehood, he tells Corriere della Sera.
At the same time, actress and model Caterina Murino has made the covers of many magazines since she came out to defend her island in a Facebook post.
Don’t interrupt your holidays in Sardinia! Wear mouth protection and other precautions and you will visit one of the most beautiful islands in the world, “writes the former Bond actress.
Three mayors of Sardinia have introduced mandatory outdoor mouth protection in their regions.
